Blue Sky is a stylish and intimate rooftop bar and restaurant in the northern part of Bangkok, on top of the Centara Grand Lad Prao Hotel. Due to its location on the 24th floor, Blue Sky offers uninterrupted views of downtown Bangkok in one panoramic shot, with endlessly streaming car lights and leafy Chatuchak Park immediately below. This unique view is one of the major selling points of Blue Sky, but so too are the full-bodied and fruity cocktails and gourmet menu which combines several world cuisines to create dishes with definite ‘wow’ factor.

Just like other rooftop bars in Bangkok, cocktails are unwaveringly popular at Blue Sky – there is something about cityscapes and cocktails that just fit together. The menu here is several pages long and covers everything from short, sharp martinis through to creamy milk based drinks like a Brandy Alexander (270 baht). However, if you come to Blue Sky you should try the citrus and sour flavours that the mixologists seem to favour here – sex on the beach (290 baht) is a popular classic made with vodka, and a sweet and sour mix of orange, lemon, pineapple, grenadine and cranberry juice. Think of it as all your daily fruits in one delicious, cool drink.
There are several signature cocktails on the menu, including the appropriately named Blue Sky (290 baht), which is a tart mix of lemon and lychee, with a vodka kick and blue Curacao to give it the unique colour. For lovers of strong sugary blends, the Big Mama is a cocktail equivalent of a sherbet dip and is an intense and almost fiery mix of cranberry, cherry, tequila, rum, lime and grenadine; but this big taste comes at a premium price of 440 baht. Both of these cocktails deliver strong flavours and are better suited as a delicious treat after dinner rather than as aperitifs. If you are looking for a sundowner cocktail, we can’t look past the classic mojito that is made with plenty of mint and lime.
The menu is a real mix-and-match ensemble of world cuisine, with an emphasis on gourmet ingredients served with style. Entrees include the usual suspects of smoked salmon and foie gras with rocket and apple tatin, but we recommend two more unusual dishes. The soft yellow tail tuna tartar (480 baht) comes pressed with crunchy apple cubes and lemon pepper caviar and is as much about texture as flavour, delivering subtle flavours reminiscent of Japanese cuisine. Another seafood dish we loved was the Alaskan king crab and lobster ravioli in a creamy Riesling sauce (560 baht), with only a hint of wine so the full flavour of the seafood can shine through.
Main course options are split into ‘from the land’ and ‘from the sea’ with snowfish, steak and lamb to choose from. For those who want the best of both, the surf and turf dish has a beef tenderloin topped with grilled rock lobster tail and deliciously chewy gnocchi, all on a bed of wild mushrooms and truffle sauce (990 baht). The rich truffle and mushroom flavours enhance the succulent beef, while the herbs in the gnocchi give some relief to the intense flavours. To finish your meal in style, go for the rich and gooey chocolate lava cake with mixed berries and chocolate shavings or the signature Blue Sky delight, which is a sundae of ice cream and fruit – particularly berries – topped off with bitter chocolate.
The strong use of a neon blue lighting scheme gives the restaurant its name and also creates a dreamlike atmosphere that is sophisticated without being too formal. Dining tables are arranged on an upper deck, and closer to the bar you will find low cushioned seating that feels more intimate and fun. There is also a small indoor area for dining. From 18:00 until 21:00 Blue Sky is plays gentle, melodic background music that keeps the attention on the food and surroundings, but after 21:00 DJ Mui takes over, spinning a broad range of tunes, from American pop and R&B, through to funky and vocal house music. The idea is to transition from restaurant to bar as customers move from dinner to drinks.
Bangkok certainly isn’t short of stunning rooftop locations, but some of the most popular are now so busy it is hard for guests to sit back and soak up the amazing views over an intimate dinner or cocktail. That’s why Blue Sky is such a welcome addition to the rooftop roster and can be the perfect location for a special meal or even as an end to a day’s shopping at Chatuchak Market and Central Lad Prao shopping mall.
