Black The Jazz Spot Club in Bangkok

Dark and intimate jazz bar on Sukhumvit

This venue has closed

Taking a lead from some of the world’s foremost jazz institutions, Black The Jazz Spot is a dimly lit and sophisticated club that is serious about the music and stays true to the tradition of hard bop: a branch of funky jazz similar to bebop that came to prominence in the 1940s and 50s. This is a club where the onus is squarely on the music, and the crowd are content to sit back and enjoy the artistry with a whisky in hand. Located on the second floor of a building on Sukhumvit Soi 33, directly opposite the Lotus Hotel, the club is just a short walk from Phrom Phong BTS Station and easy to find.

The owner and manager are both jazz fanatics – the owner is actually a gifted trumpet player and fronts the band most nights – so Black Jazz Spot is the best place in Bangkok for anyone who is knowledgeable about jazz and wants to find some likeminded souls. The first performance starts at 19:00 and is usually a solo artist, before the main band takes to the stage around 21:00. A real plus point for the Black Spot is that there is a different quartet performing every night so there is always something original and interesting, even for return visitors. There are at least three, 45 minute performances every night of the week, with a short gap in between.

Unlike many other jazz bars around Bangkok, Black Jazz Spot doesn’t pander to the wider audience with watered down pop classics played to a jazz beat; instead the folks here are proud to stay true to the art of pure jazz music. Entry is free before 20:30 but afterwards there is a cover charge of 200 baht per person, which the bar claims is justified due to their drinks prices which start from 210 baht, and the lack of a service charge. As easy as it is to strike up a conversation at the bar, it is also true that seclusion can be found at Black The Jazz Spot, with many hushed, candle lit corners in which to sit back and enjoy the smooth melodies.

There is no food served here, and you are unlikely to ‘get lucky’ here either, and that is exactly how the management like it. There are plenty other places in town for jazz-themed nights, but if you are looking for the real thing then you’ve got to stop by Black The Jazz Spot.
