  • Black Amber Thonglor Social Club

Barber Shop & Bar on Sukhumvit 55

Starting life out as a gentlemen’s barber and tattoo shop on a small alley off Thonglor, Black Amber Social Club quickly expanded across the street, converting a full townhouse at the end of Soi 6 into one of Bangkok’s coolest new whiskey bars.

The theme at their new venue continues the barber’s original gentlemen’s club vibe (don’t worry, there’s normally a mixed crowd), with the bar stocking an impressive range of whiskey, bourbon and rum all in some very sophisticated surroundings. Upstairs, there’s also a vintage shop (Mirror Mask) and a high-end tailors (Toast Bespoke).

  • Black Amber Thonglor Social Club (Bar)

Head into Thonglor Soi 6 and you might be fooled into thinking that you’ve made a wrong turn; the small alley is comprised of only a few houses, with Black Amber at the very end (the house on the right) easily missed without any signpost.

Once inside, it’s obvious that a lot of effort has gone into the renovation from townhouse to whiskey bar. It’s no surprise that Black Amber founder, Chavin Nantaterm, previously worked closely alongside Ashley Sutton on several of his big design projects in the capital, and the bar also contains a few items from Nantaterm’s personal collection including a giant ostrich skeleton in the lobby, leather chairs and a grand piano in the corner.

This really is the sort of place you would feel silly ordering anything other than a good whiskey, bourbon or whiskey/bourbon-based cocktail. There’s a collection of around 20 or so different labels on the back bar (look out for the rare single malts), with pours starting from 220 baht. Their Old Fashioned proves hugely popular too, and they also have a collection of cigars which can be smoked in the courtyard.

Black Amber Barber Shop & Tattoo

Tucked away on a Soi so small that it hasn’t even been assigned its own number (it’s located between 5 and 7), Black Amber Barber Shop has quickly risen to fame as one of the classiest places in Bangkok to get a haircut – if you’re a guy that is.

Taking over two floors of a converted shophouse, the venue oozes a distinct early 20th century gentlemen’s club vibe, complete with retro (and original) barber chairs, marble-topped counters and chunky wooden cabinets storing all the barber’s equipment.

Cuts here start at 700 baht, which we actually think is very reasonable considering the time and attention-to-detail you get with each cut, which can last up to around 45 minutes in total. There’s also a small bar downstairs serving whiskey (don’t forget to leave a tip if you go for a glass) as well as hot and cold drinks.
