Step inside Bawarchi restaurant and the first thing you notice is colour, and lots of it; pastel shades of blue, green pink and yellow are all pleasant on the eye together with hanging drapes, stencilled wall art and an impressive ceiling installation.
Add in a nightly live band (19:30 to midnight, except Mondays) who play classic Indian music and you have a grand venue that oozes a distinctly royal Indian vibe. The place is big, so seating options are numerous; sink yourself into one of their ultra-soft armchairs or sofas to dine in comfort or go for a secluded booth for a more romantic/private setting.
Classic appetisers are stylishly presented at Bawarchi Bangkok: mini papadoms curled into cones and flavoured with cumin and peppercorns, along with dips, large samosas soft to the bite and onion bajis are all recommended. However, things get even more interesting when the tandoori dishes arrive. The murgh malai kebab (350 baht), (small medallions of marinated chicken) is great, with a melt-in-the-mouth texture as soft as sashimi and smoky after-taste delivered courtesy of their in-house tandoor ovens. Similar delights include the tandoori king prawns (which feature on the new tasting set menu) and tandoori lamb chops (550 baht).
The sizzling meat dishes coming fresh out of Bawarchi Bangkok’s tandoor oven will appease the carnivores, but their menu also has plenty of vegetarian options too. Dishes like the aromatic dal makhani (245 baht), the spinach paneer curry (200 baht) and the unusual but interesting hara bhara kebab (a bean purée kebab) are all tasty additions the comprehensive menu of mostly northern Indian food.
For their curries, their simple butter chicken would go down well if you have a sensitive palate, while the more complex lamb rogan josh really impresses with its bold spice alongside a hint of sourness (both included on the tasting set menu). Bawarchi Bangkok also wins marks for their sizable drinks lists, including an extensive range of international spirits, beers and wines, and a refreshing lassi is always wise choice to cool down the spice.
