Bar@494 at Grand Hyatt Erawan is a hidden gem in downtown Bangkok. This small but classy space stocks some of the best value wines in Bangkok, a fact confirmed by a bustling bar of expats and locals on most nights of the week. It is located on the basement floor of the Grand Hyatt Erawan so there are no real views to speak of, but the wines are great, the service prompt, and the deals are just about unbeatable in central Bangkok.
The happy hour promotion runs from 17:00 to 19:00 when four selected wines and several beers are available on a buy-one-get-one-free deal. If that’s not good enough, the wine buffet from 19:00 to 21:00 sees five select labels on offer in unlimited amounts for the price of 599 baht. On any day there will be one sparkling, two white and two red labels available. What we love about the wine buffet at @494 is that they are kept on a large bench so it’s possible to help yourself, instead of waiting for serving staff to fill your glass. The regular price by the glass starts from 299 baht.
The drinks buffet is a fantastic price, but when you consider the quality along with the price, it makes Bar@494 the best place for true wine connoisseurs in Bangkok who don’t want to spend over the odds on a few glasses. The head sommelier here really knows his stuff and sources new and old world wines which changes on a weekly basis. In the past we have enjoyed a Sauvignon Blanc, Storm Crossing, from Marlborough, New Zealand which has a combination of zest with mineral overtones for an extremely pleasant taste, also an Australian full bodied Shiraz-Cabernet from Henry’s Sons, Lindeman’s, Hunter Valley.
If you get peckish you have two menus to choose from: Italian from Spasso or Thai and pan-Asian snacks from You & Mee. Both restaurants are operated by Hyatt so the quality is superb, and the sommelier is on hand to pair your food choices with wines if requested. The antipasti cold cut platter is always a great accompaniment to a full bodied red, while a range of pizzas and noodle dishes are also available.
Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel is trying to establish itself as a bit of a wine destination in the city, and with deals like this is appears to be working. To further enhance this, @494 Wine Bar offers monthly wine tasting courses where novices can turn up to learn about the flavours and complexities of wine, so they can better appreciate the excellent labels on offer. Wine tasting costs 899 baht including tapas bites.
The Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok hotel is accessible from Chitlom BTS Station, close to the Siam shopping district.
