The Bamboo Bar Bangkok is a live jazz music institution. Located on the of the ground floor of the beautifully maintained Mandarin Oriental Bangkok Hotel, the whole bar is decked out in dark wood and marble, leather and rattan, with low lights and a mirrored ceiling making this a very popular place to sample award-winning cocktails. This sophisticated venue has always evoked a somewhat colonial, late-19th century charm, but thanks to a renovation in 2015 it is more moody and stylish than ever.

Internationally renowned musicians perform six nights a week at The Bamboo Bar Bangkok (on Sunday there is a live backing band but no live singer). The roster of renowned female singers changes on a seasonal basis but you can be sure that Mandarin Oriental doesn’t cut corners and their choice of singers is no different. This is a place for classic jazz, ranging from seductive hits to more up-tempo bebop, and on any night you might hear the likes of John Coltrane, Chet Baker and Ella Fitzgerald. The three-piece backing band (consisting of bass, drums and sax) has been playing together for years and the rapport is palpable.
Following Bamboo Bar Bangkok’s revamp in early 2015, there are more stylish touches behind the bar as well as around it: barrel-aged and fruit-infused liquors, fancy tricks like mists and foams, and the introduction of serving food as part of the cocktail to enhance the drink. The head barman won Thailand’s most prestigious mixologist prize in 2015, beating competition from practically all top-level cocktail bars in Bangkok. Highlights from the sizeable drinks menu include Temptation, which is made with saffron-infused vodka, orange and passion fruit and Shooting Star, a gin martini with champagne and guava, served with a yuzu macaroon and fresh guava. The idea is to sip, then have a nibble of the fruit and macaroon in turn. The result is a fun and delicious. Cocktails start from 300 baht.
Anyone who has any experience with the Mandarin Oriental will know that service is what defines the brand, and the Bamboo Bar is no different – all guests are made to feel special.
Reaching Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is an experience in itself as you can take the complimentary shuttle boat from Sathorn Pier, located next to Saphan Taksin BTS Skytain Station. Bamboo Bar Bangkok opens at 18:00 and live music starts from 21:00 on Monday to Saturday (Sunday has live jazz music but no singer).
