Axis & Spin Bar and Lounge Bangkok

Restaurant with a view in Sukhumvit

With views along Sukhumvit Road from its high perch on the 38th and 39th floor of the Continent Hotel, Axis & Spin is not only a cool cocktail lounge with good music, head up the spiral staircase and there’s a smart gastro bar where large open windows let in a cool breeze. The Continent Hotel aims to take guests on a trip around the world, and this is the view point in the sky.

Axis & Spin is open from 16:00 until 01:00 every evening with a two for one happy hour running from 16:00 until 20:30. Every Wednesday from 21:00 a popular ladies night takes place, with two free drinks and canapés as well as the chance to win designer goodies.

Getting there is simple, as it’s only a short two minute walk from the MRT at Sukhumvit and the BTS at Asok. It’s slightly concealed, between Sukhumvit 21 and 23, up a small driveway. The bar and restaurant have a Phileas Fogg feel: a masculine drinking den for travellers who want to rest in the large leather armchairs or sink into the sofas. Two bronze leopards skulk near the bar. The most popular seats, of course, are those that look out over Sukhumvit and Benjakitti Park. Upstairs is slightly more formal, suited for a sit down dinner, with nothing but a waist-high glass panel between the dining room and the breathtaking view. From Wednesday to Saturday Axis & Spin takes on a more party vibe, with a DJ playing everything from funky soul to electro house depending on the evening.

When checking out the talents of the bartender, ordering a signature cocktail (starting at 260 baht) is the best way to go. Alongside the classics like mojitos and mai tais there’s an intriguing list of original blends here. Our first pick was the Cha la la, a vodka based drink with black grapes, oolong tea, apple juice and topped up with champagne, a refreshing mellow mix with a taste of the orient. Another Asian inspired cocktail, Lula, includes lemongrass and lychee. It doesn’t stop there though. Inspired by a white Russian and a great digestif option the flip punch combines egg whites, rum and brandy with a hint of sugar, topped with a cinnamon stick and egg shell. The stand-out for us is the chilli martini: orange and vodka that leaves a warm zing of spice on the lips.

The mixologists here are always looking to improve things, and recently introduced a glass made of ice that melts so slowly it won’t dilute the drink. We are also impressed with their mocktails which too often in Bangkok can be uninspiring. At Axis & Spin the booze free options are as impressive as their cocktail counterparts. Cucumber and lime topped with jasmine iced-tea, slightly bitter mandarin juice with chilli and a Bangkok blend of lemongrass, raspberry, peach and guava juice. The light bites on the menu are just the thing to accompany these Axis and Spin signature creations. There are several to choose from but we just loved the Marinated lamb skewers with mint (290 baht) and samosa with tamarind dipping sauce, crispy potato croquettes (160 baht). These are all ideal for sharing and variety. The drinks and food flavours have been matched, so ask the friendly team if you are looking for a pairing.

Another tasty platter that you may (or may not) want to share are the sticky barbeque spare ribs (270 baht), delicious but not very elegant! The perfect accompaniment to Axis & Spin’s beers is the grill mixed sausages (370 baht) with plenty of mustard and tomato sauce, the highlight being the spicy chorizo. On our return visit, there’s one dish we are sure to order and that’s the burger (300 baht). Served in a charcoal coloured bun, the meat was well seasoned and cooked to perfection, served with a generous portion of paprika-sprinkled fries. For those with a sweet tooth, end your meal with a creamy rich chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream.

Axis & Spin is a bar with a view in a fantastic location, serving cocktails and simple but delicious food at great prices. It’s a good option for those looking for the perfect place to start the evening.
