Aston Dining Room and Bar is a lively fine-dining restaurant that has some grand ideas about food, and relies on customers to understand their ambitious concept. First of all there is no a la carte menu served here, rather just a six course taster menu of haute cuisine (2,800 baht, not including tax, with an optional cheese course). Although the menu sources delicacies from around the world such as wagyu beef cheek or French artisanal cheese, there is an ideology at Aston Restaurant that ingredients should be grown and sourced locally, both for superior taste and for the ecological implications.
But the thing we are most impressed with here is the design concept, as the completely exposed kitchen sits in the centre of the restaurant and guests are able to watch the talented team prepare their food in something close to kitchen theatre.

Located towards the end of Sukhumvit Soi 31, the dining room at Aston Restaurant Bangkok is striking: well over half of the floor space is taken up by a massive open kitchen with just a counter separating guests from their food. This makes for a truly inclusive and interactive experience. You can easily converse with the chefs in front of you, and thank them as they deliver their creations personally. There are also a couple of secluded tables for a more intimate dining experience.
We enjoyed watching the preparation of our meal, especially the tartare of lamb: a chef seals the surface of the meat with a blow torch and burns wood chip next to the meat to give it a smoky taste. The result is a dish of soft diced lamb, served with smoked eel, bubbles of seaweed and a marinade of crème fresh. It’s a dish of contrasting flavours although the cream does dominate.
The surf and turf dish is a heavenly mix of succulent kurobuta pork and wild prawns and goes to prove that when you have superior ingredients, simple dishes can be the most impressive. Garnished with fresh leaves picked from Aston’s own rooftop garden, the flavours are remarkable. The pork is sourced from an organic farm in Thailand and to reduce the oil from the meat, it is first cooked sous vide (in an air-tight plastic bag) then grilled with a seaweed jelly. The head chef is a certified sommelier so unsurprisingly there is an impressive wine list at Aston Restaurant and the option of a wine pairing with the degustation menu for an additional 1,700 baht.
Execution and presentation of dishes is clearly a source of pride and the plating of each course is exquisite; this is most clearly expressed in the garden salad served at Aston Dining Room and Bar Bangkok. A wooden box with a glass top is served with up to 28 different vegetables sitting on top, all picked fresh that day. Beneath, there is a miniature garden and the bottom is even lined with soil.
The exterior of the three storey building is just as trendy with an almost post-apocalyptic theme of overgrown trees and plants sticking out from wire meshing and steel beams. The ground floor bar is a little pokey but has some highly regarded cocktails and premium shisha, as well as a limited menu of tapas dishes.
It is certainly not cheap at Aston Dining Room and Bar and guests pay as much for the experience as for the food, but the menu has been well thought out and service is seamless.
