Above Eleven Rooftop Bar on Sukhumvit Soi 11
Cocktail and Fusion Cuisine on Bangkok's Party Street
32 floors above Bangkok’s premier party street on Sukhumvit Soi 11 you will find Above Eleven, a chilled-out Central Park inspired rooftop bar, set out over two floors. As well as coming for a sunset cocktail, you can also experience their unusual Peruvian-Japanese fusion dishes. Around ten minutes walk from the BTS at Nana, Above Eleven bar and restaurant is on the rooftop of Fraser Suites and can be accessed by the entrance at the back of the serviced apartment complex. Open from 18:00 until 2:00 every night, it’s always busy so if you fancy dinner it is worth booking ahead.
The entrance lobby in Fraser Suites is filled with faux greenery and birdcages, a theme that continues along the mock-grass corridors and in front of the bathroom is a mini maze with a garden bench. Thankfully the twee decor is reserved for the indoor spaces. On the two balconies outside the view does most of the talking, with modernistic metal and glass trees to protect guests during rainy season, a simple border of grass and the occasional chair that looks like a wheelbarrow. From here you get a 180 degree view of Bangkok, looking towards Siam and the famous row of Bangkok’s shopping malls. There is nothing better than looking down at the slow-moving traffic whilst you enjoy the breeze and the drink in your hand.
Like most rooftop bars, the creative cocktails are an essential part of the blend. Above Eleven have incorporated hints of a Japanese/Peruvian/New York mash-up into the list. If you fancy a taste of New York, try the Big Smokey Apple or Park View – a blend of Feijoa, rose apple, elderflower, mint and lime. If it’s a South American flavour you are after we recommend the Chilcano – a muddle of Pisco, lime, fresh ginger and ginger ale. There are also plenty of sake based concoctions. A light and refreshing option is the Michelada beer, served over ice with lime, pepper and a salted rim. There is also a decent selection of classics and soft drinks. The bar can get busy, so service is occasionally slow. No matter, this is a rooftop bar for taking your time, not a ‘catch a sunset and go’ type of place.
If you are not familiar with Nikkei the Japanese/Peruvian fusion that is served at Above Eleven Rooftop then never fear, staff are happy to advise you and the menu is clear and descriptive. Recommendations include the seafood ceviche: prawns and seabass in chilli sauce, with deep-fried calamari and sweet potatoes, and the slow-cooked lamb shank served with salsa and rice. There is also a decent selection of vegetarian options. We love the causa vegetarian, a plate of fluffy mashed potato with yellow chilli and lime juice, topped with carrot, asparagus and quail egg salad. It comes in Peru’s warm and spicy marinade. The food may be good, and it’s certainly unusual, but the greatest pull here is most definitely the view. Secure a front-row seat for one of Bangkok’s famous sunsets and everything else just fades into the background.
