A.R Sutton Engineers Siam is a dimly lit and lusciously decorated cocktail bar in Ekkamai. A little bit like a captain’s quarters on an ancient vessel, there is a mass of dark wood, winding iron staircases and tight spaces. As you would expect from Ashley Sutton, Bangkok’s premier bar and club interior designer, the concept is empathically executed for an otherworldly experience. Sutton Engineers Siam makes a great place for a few after-dinner drinks with your date. Larger groups should avoid as the lack of space means groups of more than four won’t get the same cosy feeling, but for a romantic tête-à-tête there’s few better places in Bangkok.
Located in Park Lane lifestyle mall just around the corner their sister restaurant, Hot Rod, you can stock up on excellent Thai tapas next door then move here for liquid refreshments.

The cocktail menu is very short, although every one of them jumps off the page. Bottles of herb-infused liquors and syrups are lined up around the bar so you can be confident that whatever your favourite tipple, the skilled and rather dapper bartenders can whip you up something special. Cocktails cost 260-350 baht depending on your choice of spirit.
There is a bias towards gin-based mixes at Sutton’s Engineers Arms, as you would expect from a man who keeps his giant copper distillery in his bar. In fact, there is now a special cocktail menu dedicated solely to his famed botanical mixture with nine speciality drinks to try, each using the bar’s own small batch gin.
The gin in question, Iron Balls, is produced in small batches so each one has a slightly different combination of fruity overtones. We picked up hints of pineapple, lemon and lychee in a few different batches. We’re assured by the man himself this is exactly how it’s supposed to taste. One thing is for sure, it’s the only gin I can drink on the rocks and actually enjoy. It costs 320 baht for a neat Iron Balls gin or in a G&T, such is the price for exclusivity.
Along with the bar area, there is a small courtyard that is well sheltered from Ekkamai Road, just a couple of metres past the tall ferns that line the entrance.
