Shopping in Pratunam is the number one activity in this popular retail and hotel district of central Bangkok. As well as offering great value accommodation and interesting street food, the compact Pratunam area ranks alongside Bangkok’s busiest and best places to come shopping. Whether you are looking for clothing, accessories, souvenirs or electronics like cheap laptops and cameras - it can all be found here. We have shopped till we dropped, and present our Top 10 shopping in Pratunam below.
Getting to Pratunam is straightforward: it’s only a ten-minute walk from Ratchathewi or Chit Lom BTS. From BTS Chit Lom, take exit 1 and walk ten minutes down Ratchadamri Road past Central World on your left, over the Saen Saeb canal and then left on Phetachburi Road (you will hit Platinum Shopping Mall first.)

The crown jewel of Pratunam, this mega mall filled with well over 1,000 shops is often compared to an indoor Chatuchak weekend market. Many visitors prefer it, thanks to the air-conditioning, and the fact that it is open from 10:00 until 22:00 every day and most importantly the discounts offered if you bulk buy. If you see three or four items that you want, be sure to try and haggle, sometimes you can get as much as 30% discount. With four floors and 1,300 shops you’ll need time to see it all. Clothing ranges from baby items to plus sized, and even cool imported brands from Korea and Japan, but the bulk of it is women’s fashion. You can grab a map near the bottom of the escalator which can help a little with navigation. Read More...

Panthip (or as some say ‘Pantip’) Plaza divides the crowds, some loving the variety and great bargains and others wary of the rumours around counterfeit goods. Despite its slightly shabby appearance we still think it is one of the best places to get great value electronics equipment, especially if you have done a little research on the item you wish to purchase, take your time to shop around the mall and remember the old saying that if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. Every kind of hardware and software can be found here, cameras, laptops, tablets, mobile phones and many of the shops are wholesalers, so it is a great place to grab a deal, or get some extras thrown in free. It is also a good place to come if you need your phone unlocked, to clean up a virus or need a new casing for your laptop. Read More...

If you want to shop like a Bangkokian, or even just soak up the atmosphere of shopping like a local, then we recommend that you head to Pratunam Wholesale Market. Again, the focus is on clothing here, from knock-off T-shirts to full-length satin evening gowns with diamante detailing. There is even a section dedicated to fancy dress, with wigs, feathers and plenty of sequins. A giant roof covers the market and makes the temperature similar to a greenhouse, but the cheap rents keep the clothing prices low. Like many other markets, you can negotiate, but you won’t be able to try things on. Thankfully some stores have tape measures to give you a decent estimate. Although the market is open 24 hours a day, we recommend coming after 10:00, as otherwise you might find most of the shutters down. Read More...

Shubuya 19 is the new kid on the Pratunam block, and has a distinctly teenage feel to it. It follows the same concept as Platinum Mall (and is located just opposite it), plenty of clothing for men and women, costume jewellery, handbags and other accessories. Although it is quite small compared to some of the other malls here, it does provide a different angle, with a focus on young fashion and up to the minute designs. Shibuya 19 mall is set out over six floors, and they have created a colourful guide and map to give you an idea of what items can be found on which floors. If you are feeling peckish then head up to the 6th floor when you can grab a bite to eat at the food court, which serves a variety of Thai, Chinese, Indian and international dishes. Read More...

If the bargains aren’t good enough for you at Platinum, we suggest you head to Palladium, its shinier, newer and, dare we say, cheaper, sister. On our last visit we were impressed with the renovations which have created wider walkways between the roomy shops, making the whole shopping experience far less claustrophobic. Here they pile it very high indeed, selling mainly women’s fashion, accessories and jewellery. Most shops we passed by on our last trip had 100 baht stickers in the window, some of the lowest prices we have seen in the Pratunam district. Head down to the basement of Palladium World Shopping Mall if you are looking for some decently priced jewellery: Grand Silver Jewelry is known as the place to come for great deals on silver in Bangkok. Baiyoke Gallery Fashion Mall, or just ‘B-gallery’ is a modern and spacious mall in the very centre of the Pratunam district. Opened at the end of 2013, the five floors contain mostly independent retailers specialising in clothing and accessories. The whole place feels a bit like an air-conditioned, roomier extension of the better-known Pratunam Market which surrounds it, whilst several novel features like the fake grass lawn, an English post box and bright designs all draw similarities to the larger and more popular Terminal 21 on Sukhumvit Road.
Just like most shopping places in Pratunam, bargaining is advisable although most of the prices on dresses, t-shirts, accessories and electronics are already cheap. The mall is named after, and owned by, Baiyoke Tower which is just a two minutes walk away.
- Opening Hours: 10:00 - 21:00
- Location: Walk Up Phetchaburi Soi 21 from Platinum Mall or down the same road from Baiyoke Tower
Proving particularly popular with young females, City Complex in Pratunam is six-storeys of clothes, clothes and more clothes! The large mall is opposite the more popular Platinum Mall, and has a vast selection of cheap and cheerful dresses, shoes, fabrics, accessories and the odd t-shit/jeans store for the guys.
If you get bored of the rows and rows of almost identical stalls, head to the fifth floor for their tired-looking but cheap food court, which serves up mostly Thai dishes. Find City Complex by walking along Phetchaburi Road (if you’re coming from Chid Lom BTS, walk up past Central World then use one of the flyovers over Phetchaburi Road to access the mall.)

Following the same theme as the rest of the shopping options in the Platinum area, Baiyoke Tower Garment Centre is a shopping arcade selling lots of cheap clothes and accessories. This shopping spot has definitely seen its better days; however, if you’re visiting/staying in the Baiyoke Tower and want to do a spot of bargain hunting, this small market-like area is a particularly convenient choice. Prices are dirt cheap and if you’re buying in bulk you’re sure to be able to negotiate a discount. Baiyoke Tower Garment Centre is also home to a few tailors too and prices start at about 800 baht for a custom made shirt.
- Opening Hours: 10:00 – 22:00
- Location: Bottom of the Baiyoke Tower, 222 Ratchaprarop Road, Bangkok
Indra Square Market feels like another air-conditioned extension of the nearby Pratunam Market, selling most of the same clothing items at similar prices. This indoor shopping Mall is part of the Indra Regent Hotel, and has over 300 stores dedicated to fabrics, dresses, knock-off designer t-shirts, accessories and electronics. For a change from all those clothes stores, head to the second floor which is where you’ll find a more diverse range of products including local artwork, handicrafts, children’s toys and second hand mobile phones and tablets. There is also a very cheap food court at the top, great for those on a budget and not concerned about dining in style. Read More...

Some might dismiss Krung Thong Plaza as being an aging collection of shops catered towards those going for the whole 1990’s girl band look, whilst others will claim it’s a forgotten goldmine of cheap and quirky clothing waiting to be exploited. Access is at street level on Phetchaburi Road or via the overhead bridge which links directly from the massive Pantip Plaza IT Mall across the street.
Once inside, you’ll be greeted by a mishmash of run down stores selling brightly coloured fabrics, t-shirts with slogans strewn across and plenty a snazzy accessory stores that sell funky hats, sunglasses and jewellery. Prices, just like the standard of upkeep at Krung Thong Plaza, are low – even lower if you try your hand at little bit of bargaining.
