Ask any local what to eat in Pratunam and their first answer would probably be steamed chicken at Kaiton Pratunam. Originally a Chinese dish, ‘khao man gai’ is a firm favourite in Bangkok for locals and tourists. This legendary shophouse serving fresh and succulent chicken is opposite Palladium World Shopping Mall on the corner of Phetchaburi Soi 30. It’s an open fronted shop so there’s no air conditioning, and there’s a lot of commotion going on out front with chopping and ordering, but don’t let that deter you. The chicken served here is really memorable, laid out in strips on oily rice with a hint of garlic, and garnished with some crunchy cucumber.
- Opening Hours: 05:00 until 02:00
- Location: Phetchaburi Soi 30. Close to the intersection with Ratchaprarop.
This hole-in-the-wall noodle place serves local favourites such as wonton noodles and wonton soup, consisting of pork, crab or shrimp. Both dishes are filling and delicious. This famous local restaurant also sells braised pigs leg. The tables are stainless steel as are the cups and there’s no air-conditioning but that’s all part of the fun. SabX2 is only a short walk from the entrance of Soi Phetchaburi 19, opposite Platinum Fashion Mall and Grand Diamond Hotel. Be aware, this restaurant opens for breakfast and lunch only.
- Opening Hours: 10:00 – 18:00 (closes early if they sell out of meat)

Occupying the ground floor and garden of a pink wooden house, Once Upon a Time is an attractive and quirky setting in which to enjoy tourist-friendly Thai food. It’s undeniable that dishes have been modified for the western palate, but the quaint little house and cute surrounds somewhat negate the fact that certain dishes are lacking a bit in flavor. Once Upon a Time also serves some Western dishes making it a good option for a group who want to enjoy the best of east and west.

Krua Aroi is a family run restaurant that specialises in classic Thai dishes. Located on Phetchaburi Soi 30, opposite CentralWorld and just before the bridge over the canal, there is a neighbourhood feel to this small restaurant that is reflected in the powerful and authentic food. Often packed with locals, few foreigners find their way to Krua Aroi, which is a shame because it’s a great example of a local Thai joint serving tasty, inexpensive food. The menu is translated into English so ordering is no problem despite the rudimentary English skills of the staff. Find Krua Aroi by looking for the currency exchange shop Super Rich.
- Opening Hours: 11:00 – 21:00
- Location: Phetchaburi Soi 30 (walk until you reach the ‘T’ junction. Restaurant is just on your left).

At Baiyoke Sky Hotel, you can enjoy all the typical dishes popular at a Thai floating market, minus the heat, mosquitos and travel. This kitsch but enjoyable buffet is a great introduction to Thai food with everything from fresh shrimp and crabs, satay chicken, a range of curries, and cute sweets and desserts. The Baiyoke Floating Market Buffet isn’t the type of place to make a wedding proposal as the whole vibe is a bit cheesy, but for some fun Thai dining in Pratunam, you could do a lot worse than up here on the 75th floor. The ticket also permits free entry to the observation deck on the top floor of the hotel. Read More...
