Quite literally ‘floating’ on Thailand’s famous River Kwai, each villa here comes with its own cute private patio, perfect for an alfresco breakfast, sunbathing, or dipping your toes into the cool water flowing calmly downstream. In keeping with the natural surroundings, each room is built using (mostly) natural and locally sourced materials, with rich teak and timber wood in ample supply throughout. If you can drag yourself away from the luxurious villas and tranquil surroundings of the resort, excursions are available which take groups up or down the river, through the popular Sai Yok National Park and to famous attractions such as The Hell Fire Pass and Bridge Over the River Kwai. The term ‘glamping’ might make us cringe, but there’s no better way to describe what’s in store at Hintok River Camp. Here, you’ll be swapping the traditional bricks and mortar of a hotel for canvas sheets and tent poles, bedding down for the night next to the gushing River Kwai that snakes its way around the edge of the resort. Instead of a customary foam sheet and sleeping bed as you might remember from childhood camping trips, accommodation here is far more civilized, with sizeable, weather-proof tents coming with their own comfy beds, electricity supply and en-suite bathrooms. There’s also an outdoor swimming pool brilliantly etched into the river bank, blending in seamlessly with the surrounding greenery and offering a memorable place to cool off whilst admiring the river views. Where: Pranburi (15 minutes’ from Hua Hin)
Time from Bangkok: 2.5 hours

Taking on a distinctly Moroccan theme with its arched walkways, vibrant interiors and whitewashed stone architecture, Villa Maroc is one the standout resorts along the western Thai coastline. Enjoying a superb position right on the beach in Pranburi, Villa Maroc is fronted by an elegant infinity edge pool that looks out over the sea, whilst the sand down below retains a private feel with only a few sun loungers reserved exclusively for the hotel’s guests. Situated around 15 minutes’ away from the more built-up town of Hua Hin, this lavish resort has a selection of pool villas and courts, and each one continues the authentic North African feel with low beds, pastel colours and thick stone walls to keep the air cool. Where: Hua Hin
Time from Bangkok: 2.5 hours

Whilst most of Hua Hin’s top hotels are set right next to the beach, the five-star Guti Resort does things differently, set back a little bit inland and surrounded by the picturesque Thai countryside in every direction. The range of villas here really take advantage of the peaceful and particularly green settings, with each and every one coming with its own private infinity pool and adjacent sun terrace. Décor inside is rustic and oozes a certain contemporary-Thai charm, with locally sourced fabrics, teak furnishings and art installations such as giant Buddhist gongs hanging over the beds. Plus the resort has a full program of activities, such as morning yoga classes, billiards and cooking classes available free of charge.

It’s a little bit off the beaten track, yet the nearby area is in no short supply of attractions, including the Black Mountain Water Park, a golf club, and Hutsadin Elephant Foundation, and a drive to Hua Hin takes just a few minutes. Read More...

Six Sense’s highly rated Evason Hua Hin really feels like a proper beach resort, with its standout lagoon-style swimming pool fronting the Gulf of Thailand, and range of villas and suites dotted around the 20 acres of landscaped gardens. Onsite, you can also find a real lagoon (not so good for swimming) complete with lotus leaves and fringed by palm trees, really adding to the naturalistic feel of the hotel. Relaxing poolside or soaking up the sun on the beach are the most popular activities here, but for the more adventurous, Evason is well placed for some fun excursions around the Pran Buri area; Sam Roi Yot National Park a short drive away, as well as a few good courses and nature reserves nearby. Where: Khao Yai

Possibly Thailand’s most unusual hotel, DNA Resort and Spa resembles something straight out of Star Trek with its space-age design featuring circular pod-like villas and rooms set along a tubular walkway. Keeping the whole circle theme, everything inside the rooms is round too, including the beds, windows, sofas and sinks. Just as striking is the resort’s location, sat in the shadows of a looming mountain range in the middle of Khao Yai National Park. With air conditioning, Wi-Fi access, an onsite restaurant, spa and swimming pool, the resort has all the conveniences to make for a comfortable stay, despite being quite isolated from any major towns or cities… but that’s all part of the draw in visiting this beautiful part of the country.

X2’s brightly painted metal containers are an instantly recognizable sight on the picturesque banks of the River Kwai, fitting-in perfectly with the hotel’s ‘Industrial Chic Design’ concept that runs throughout the resort. The theme is continued with helpings of steal framework, polished concrete flooring, exposed brickwork and plywood adding to the cozy feeling of the rooms. Although undeniably funky, what we really love most here are the views. Each villa looks out over the vast river which fronts the resort, and guests can enjoy the 180-degree panorama from their own private terrace, or by looking out from the floor-to-ceiling windows whilst tucked up in bed. Where: Koh Samet
Time from Bangkok: 3.5 hours

The closest island to Bangkok that’s worth spending any considerable time on is Koh Samet, proving particularly popular with the local Thai crowd all year round. Our favourite place to stay on this lively island has to be Le Viman Cottages, perched above the delightful Ao Prao Beach and a short walk away from the main restaurant and nightlife scene on Samet. The cottages and villas here create a real summery feel thanks to the hardwood flooring, four-poster beds and elegant white drapes, but what impresses most is the views, looking out across the rocky coastline and down to the beach below. There’s also an onsite restaurant, fully-serviced spa and a rather inviting swimming pool that looks out over the Gulf of Thailand enjoying more of those great ocean views.
