Silom Clubs

Breaks

Open: 21:00 - 03:00 (Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat)
Location: Soi 2/1 Silom Road (next to Richard's restaurant, up some stairs)
Skytrain: BTS Sala Daeng

A small, low-key space decked out like an underground warehouse party and with a music policy and crowd to match. Reeking of mainstream defiance, 12" record covers hang off the walls instead of the usual generic fittings. These, and the uncompromising nights it hosts, are the joyous end-product of the Japanese proprietor's devotion to rebellious dance music. Disco, indie, drum & bass, old school hip-hop, electro, roots, techno, Latin - any fresh, edgy sound brimming with attitude gets an airing. If disillusioned with what qualifies as real music in Silom's other clubs, 'Breaks' comes recommended.

Funky Dojos

Open: early - 03:00
Location: 105 Patpong Soi 2
Contact:  +66 (0)8 155 0691
Skytrain: BTS Sala Daeng

This obnoxious, sleek white box of a club sits in the thick of Patpong’s flying ping-pong balls. Come enjoy some of Bangkok's best electro technicians (including the excellent DJ Saint Vincent) and the deliciously sleazy vibe. Grab a stool overlooking the alleyway for some of the most debauched people-watching in town. Then head to the graffiti-strewn back to dance like a nutter alongside the salacious mix of lustlorn men and off-duty go-go girls. Not for everybody then, but leave your sex industry indignation at home and there's fun to be had. Stays open till 03:00.

Lucifers Disko

Open: 19:00 - 02:00
Location: 76/1-3 Patpong Soi 1
Contact: +66 (0)2 234 6902
Skytrain: Sala Daeng

Located halfway down Patpong 1, on the left-hand side of the Patpong Night Bazaar, is Lucifer. Inside is a big, two-level club where red-eyed demon masks glare down onto a packed crowd dancing away to anything from pop and dance through to hardcore techno and trance music. Staff clad in orange uniforms and Satan's horns serve a large variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Amazingly, considering the size of the place, there is no cover charge. Always loud, often packed.

Luminous

Open: 21:00 - 02:00
Location: 78/80 Silom Soi 4
Contact:  (09) 890 8441.
Skytrain: BTS Sala Daeng

Formerly Soi 4 hip-hop institution 'Speed', this is essentially the same multi-floor venue, only they've maxed up the 'bling' and juggled around the DJ booth and bar. When its dark, the whisky flowing, the beats bumping, you can barely tell the difference. Not a bad thing considering it was the rawest hip-hop club in town for years. Like the old days, it only really gets busy on weekends, and upstairs - where house music reins - is still a ghost land. However, the odd one-off event (Dude Sweet, Club Soma and DJ Nakadia have all staged nights here recently) is drawing more eclectic crowds - ravers, not just aspiring rappers. The al fresco area out front is a good spot for seeing whose coming and going on flirty Soi 4, and the whisky sets notable for not slaying your wallet.

Tapas

Open: 20:00 - 01:00
Location: 114/17 Silom Soi 4, Sala Daeng
Contact: +66 (0)2 632-0920
Skytrain: Sala Daeng

On groovy and predominantly gay Soi 4, this chic Moroccan grotto is the place to go for Balearic house music. Set in an atmospheric two-storey venue, it attracts a straight, hip and beautiful crowd, the occasional celebrity just itching to be spotted. Live percussionists perform twice a week. While a great price to chill during the week, it's usually hot and heaving on weekends, especially upstairs. Should the interior's charm turn to claustrophobia, head for the al fresco area out front with its rattan chairs, chatty cocktail enthusiasts and processions of toned men and other night creatures.

Twilo

Open: early - 03:00
Location: 70 Patpong Soi 1, Silom
Skytrain: BTS Saladaeng

'Twilo' is the kind of chic open-fronted venue that, if it was plunked in Rome or Paris, would soon be heaving with svelte, young sophisticates sipping cosmopolitans and carousing to sultry deep house. Unfortunately, here amidst the sleazy commercial turmoil of Patpong it is guilty of pandering to the lowest common denominator. The music - the same nightly formula of turgid live hip-hop - is geared towards drawing in the largest possible number of passing tourists. They, in turn, attract the largest possible number of Patpong's freelancing bargirls. And, in a rather depressing vicious circle, their presence attracts even more tourists. The result is a lazy, sleazy sludge of a club; a trendy hooker pick-up joint that refuses to deviate from the formula, ever! Still, though drinks prices are high, the droves keep on coming and the place is often hopping.
