Ampawa Floating Market & Tha Kha

Bangkok Floating Markets

Visit two floating markets
Boat trips along canal
Benjarong porcelain museum
Palm sugar village

This floating market tour gives you not one but two floating market experiences. Tha Kha and Amphawa are two hidden gems lying within 10 kilometres of their more famous sister, Damnoen Saduak. Both are smaller in scale but no less charming and definitely less touristy.

Imagine floating on a wooden row boat along Tha Kha’s sugar palm-fringed canals and watch as elderly ladies ply through, their boats laden to the brim with bundles of lotus flowers, farm-fresh coconuts and produces. Things move along at a leisurely pace here, before picking up a bit once you get to Amphawa, where you will visit a Benjarong porcelain museum and watch as each delicate ware comes to life at the tip of a painter’s brush.

Then, a visit to a local temple, sugar palm village and Amphawa’s evening floating market complete the day’s journey. While here, don’t miss a chance to try some of the sweets made from locally grown sugar palm, as you have come to the capital of Thailand’s sugar palm industry.

Ampawa Floating Market & Tha Kha Review

Although the tour kicked off at 07:00 during Bangkok's dreaded rush hour, the journey was pleasant.  We were outbound while most of the traffic was coming into the city.  The minivan was comfy enough to make up for the lost time in bed and I managed to sneak in a quick nap. Read More...

Ampawa & Tha Kha Floating Market

Weekend:
07:00 - 17:00

A 30-minutes drive brings you to Tha Kha. Step back in time to see a traditional floating market, which originally took place only 6-7 days each month, depending on the phase of the moon. Enjoy the delightful display of exotic fruit and vegetables and local delicacies sold mostly by elderly women folk in their small rowing boats.

We will take you on a tour of the canals in row boats (4 persons per boat), then continue by van to Amphawa, a picturesque little town located on the Tha Chin River. We will first visit the Benjarong House and Museum, where you will also have the opportunity to watch the skilled artisans painting the delicate china ware with intricate designs. After lunch at a local seafood restaurant, embark on a boat trip in a motorized long-tail boat (max 8 persons per boat) to explore the numerous canals and observe traditional Thai way of living along Thailand’s waterways.

Visit Wat Bang Kung, built during the Ayudhaya period (more than 200 years ago). This interesting temple is completely embraced by the roots of a huge Banyan Tree. Another stop will be made at a family’s home to observe the production of palm sugar. Take a stroll along Amphawa's main canal, where on weekends a lively market selling mostly home-made food and pastries, takes place. Transfer back to your hotel in Bangkok
