Ampawa Floating Market & Tha Kha

Bangkok Floating Markets

  • This floating market tour gives you not one but two floating market experiences. Tha Kha and Amphawa are two hidden gems lying within 10 kilometres of their more famous sister, Damnoen Saduak. Both are smaller in scale but no less charming and definitely less touristy.

Imagine floating on a wooden row boat along Tha Kha’s sugar palm-fringed canals and watch as elderly ladies ply through, their boats laden to the brim with bundles of lotus flowers, farm-fresh coconuts and produces. Things move along at a leisurely pace here, before picking up a bit once you get to Amphawa, where you will visit a Benjarong porcelain museum and watch as each delicate ware comes to life at the tip of a painter’s brush.

Then, a visit to a local temple, sugar palm village and Amphawa’s evening floating market complete the day’s journey. While here, don’t miss a chance to try some of the sweets made from locally grown sugar palm, as you have come to the capital of Thailand’s sugar palm industry.

Ampawa & Tha Kha Floating Market

  • Weekend: 07:00 - 17:00

This day trip will bring you to places rarely visited by foreign tourists. An early start from Bangkok to see the unique fresh market along the railway tracks in Mae Klong. When the train approaches the station, watch the vendors dismantling their stalls, so that the train can pass through.

A 30-minutes drive brings you to Tha Kha. Step back in time to see a traditional floating market, which takes places on only on weekends (SAT/SUN) and on specia days, depending on the phase of the moon. Enjoy the delightful display of exotic fruit and vegetables and local delecacies sold mostly by elderly women folk in their small rowing boats.

We will take you on a tour of the canals in row boats (4 persons per boat) and visit a local family’s home to see, how palm sugar is produced. Continue by van to Amphawa, a picturesque little town located on the Maeklong River. We will first visit the Benjarong House and Museum, where you will also have the opportunity to watch the skilled artisans painting the delicate china ware with intricate designs. After lunch at Baan Ampawa Resort, embark on a boat trip in a motorized long-tail boat to explore the numerous canals and observe traditional Thai way of living along Thailand’s waterways.

Visit Wat Bang Kung, built during the Ayudhaya period (more than 200 years ago). This interesting temple is completely embraced by the roots of a huge Banyan Tree. Take a stroll along Amphawa's main canal, where on weekends a lively market selling mostly home-made food and pastries, takes place. Transfer back to your hotel in Bangkok.
