    Travel Advice Oct 18, 2016

During this time of mourning for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, visitors to Thailand are still very much welcome, despite the great impact his passing has had on the entire nation.

What is open, what is not:
Airports, hotels, shopping malls, markets and cultural attractions remain open, only some nightlife venues and leisure attractions may close for a short period of time, while others will remain open. If you have a specific venue in mind it's always best to check ahead.

Pubs and bars have been allowed to open but they are not allowed to play loud music. Nightclubs and adult entertainment have closed voluntarily with no exact date on when they will reopen.

The Grand Palace in Bangkok is closed to the general public until 20th October because King Bhumibol Adulyadej's funeral will take place at The Temple of The Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) inside the palace grounds.

What to wear:
People have been asked to wear black or dark coloured clothes during the mourning period, but white or grey is acceptable. We encourage you to show your respect to Thailand during this time of personal grief by dressing conservatively (a dark coloured T-shirt is fine) and keeping a respectful manner when out in public.

Cancelled Events:

  - Full Moon Party - Koh Phangan - October 17
Yi Pen Lantern Festival - Chiang Mai - November 13-15

Phuket and Islands:

- What should I wear? It has not been ‘demanded’ of tourists, but people have been asked to wear black or dark coloured clothes during the mourning period, but white or grey is acceptable. If you do not have such colours available, a black ribbon is enough.

- Can I wear a bikini on the beach? The beaches are still open and wearing swimwear on them is still permitted.

- How long will places be closed? The bars and nightlife venues are expected to remain closed until Thursday 20 October 2016, though some may not open again until Saturday 12 November 2016

We will update this page regularly with the latest news that impacts visitors coming to Bangkok and Thailand.
